Meet Thomas M. Nelson

Tom Nelson holds the position of executive vice president and chief credit officer at New Republic Bank, where he is responsible for overseeing the processes, policies, and procedures related to credit approvals for all lending activities within the firm.

With a wealth of experience in senior leadership roles, Tom has a proven track record in managing lending and credit approval practices in various financial services firms. He possesses expertise in collaborating with boards of directors and contributing to corporate growth as an integral member of executive teams.

Before joining New Republic Bank, Tom served as the executive vice president and senior credit officer for a multi-state region at Iberiabank. He also held the position of executive vice president and chief credit officer at BNC Bank, where he played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and soundness of the bank's substantial $6 billion loan portfolio.

Throughout his career, Tom has been involved in various roles at SterlingSouth Bank, including chief credit officer and interim president. Notably, he brings valuable experience in business merger and acquisition activities, having successfully led the integration of credit functions from over 10 acquired institutions into a growth-oriented financial services organization.

Tom's early career included service as a Captain in the USMC as a naval aviator, receiving an Honorable Discharge before embarking on his financial services career. He earned his B.S. in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
